Blank Tiles in Mahjong: What They Are and How House Rules Use Them

Many mahjong sets include a few extra blank tiles. They are not part of the official 152-tile American game, but they are useful.

Blanks as spares

The simplest use: if you lose or chip a tile, a blank can stand in for it. Some players write the missing tile on the blank.

Blanks in house rules

Some groups add blanks to the game as a house rule. A common version lets a player trade a blank for a tile from the discard pile. Because rules vary a lot, always agree on:

• How many blanks are in play
• When a blank can be exchanged
• Whether blanks can be used for the winning tile
