The suits
Bams (bamboo) show sticks, and the 1 Bam is traditionally a bird. Craks (characters) carry a number and a character. Dots (circles) show round symbols.
Honor tiles
Winds are North, East, West and South. Dragons are Red, Green and White; the White Dragon is often called "Soap" and is also used as zero on the American card.
Flowers and Jokers
Flowers are used in many American hands. Jokers are unique to American mahjong and replace tiles in groups of three or more.
